Ron Paul: Foreign Policy

In the realm of foreign policy, what would you say is the biggest threat to US national security?  Is it terrorism?  Is it Iran? Russia? North Korea? China?  For the answer, who better to turn to than the highest-ranking military officer in the United States:

You heard it right, folks.  According to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff himself, the most dangerous and pressing threat to the security of the United States is our unsustainable national debt.

Only one candidate for president has addressed this issue and has a plan to fix it: Ron Paul. His proposed budget cuts $1 Trillion (that’s $1,000,000,000,000.00) in year one, and balances the federal budget within three years, by simply returning spending to 2006 levels.

Beyond Dollars and Cents

While the clear and present danger our national debt poses to our national security could not be any more obvious, Ron Paul’s specific positions on foreign policy are still widely mis-characterized by the mainstream media and, as a result, misunderstood by much of the public.  So again, why not turn to those men and women who put their lives on the line as the armed instrument of American foreign policy, to begin to get a sense of why they tend to overwhelmingly support Ron Paul for their next Commander-in-Chief:

Clearly US servicemen and women overwhelmingly support Ron Paul for President due to the fact that these people have pledged their very lives in defense of the Constitution, and demand in their leader convictions at least as committed and powerful.  They willingly offer to make the ultimate sacrifice, should it be required, to uphold their oath.  Is it any wonder that they should desire in their leader the same conviction to ensure, by getting a formal declaration from the elected representatives of the People, that they will not be asked to make this sacrifice in vain?

As a veteran himself, Ron Paul recognizes the imperative of maintaining a strong national defense.  And it is only through his own unwavering support of the Constitution, and the liberties enshrined therein, that his actions as Commander-in-Chief will actually serve to strengthen our defense.  He understands that the Constitution MANDATES a declaration of war by Congress before the initiation of hostilities.  How many needless conflicts avoided, how many fewer new enemies created, how much treasure saved, how much bloodshed, suffering, and death could have been spared had previous leaders simply upheld their own oath to the Constitution, instead of rushing to war under bad intelligence and false pretenses?

A Constitutional Foreign Policy Strengthens the National Defense

US foreign policy CANNOT be properly understood without a clear knowledge of the concept of “blowback.”  This term was coined by the CIA itself to describe the unintended (and dangerous) consequences of meddling in the internal affairs of other sovereign states in the world.  A Constitutional foreign policy is intentionally designed to limit the possibility of blowback coming back around to harm the United States and damage our national security:

A Foreign Policy of Non-Interventionism is NOT Isolationism

Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations — entangling alliances with none.

Thomas Jefferson

Inaugural Address, 1801

Ron Paul’s Constitutional foreign policy is nothing more than a direct application of the wisdom of the Founders.  Modern political scientists and international relations “experts” are quick to refer to the “carrot and stick” analogy of international interactions.  The implication is that the US basically has only two main means of convincing other nations to conform to our will: through monetary inducements (the carrot) or military force (the stick).  Does anyone else see the basic problem that arises by viewing our neighbors on this Earth as some type of beasts of burden, to driven by the lash or otherwise just to service us?

We simply cannot afford this type of relationship with the rest of the world any longer.  It has bankrupted us both financially and morally as well.  When will we ever learn that the true admiration and emulation of our fellow nation-states can never be bought nor forced over the barrel of a gun?  Yet these worthy ideals CAN be achieved through patient and open dialogue, free and prosperous trade, and genuine cultural interchange.  That is the core of a Ron Paul foreign policy, and it is the key to a safer, more prosperous, freer society, worldwide.

One Final Thought on Foreign Policy

The Golden Rule teaches us that we ought to do unto others as we would have them do unto us.  This is perhaps the most fundamental concept guiding ALL interactions between ALL human beings.  Ask yourself this question, as you view this final video: how would we react if someone else were treating us in the same way we have been treating them?
